MERGER OF COUNTIES

Poll To Be Held Wairewa county ratepayers have requested a poll on the proposed merger of the county with the Akaroa county. The poll will be held on November 28. The final scheme for the proposed new Banks Peninsula County Council was announced last month by the Local Government Commission. The new county would have come into existence on April 1, 1965.

Electors of either county had the right to request a poll; a right which 121 ratepayers in the Wairewa county have taken advantage of At present, there are 424 electors on the roll and providing that more than twothirds vote, the majority count will decide the issue. However, if less than twothirds vote, then 60 per cent must vote against the proposal for the scheme to be abandoned.

The county roll will close at 5 p.m. on October 30.
