Knife Used In Assault On Two Girls

AUCKLAND, Oct 9. A young woman, who went to-the assistance of another girl who had been beaten unconscious, had a carving knife drawn across her throat and jabbed in her stomach, Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M., was told today. Detective-Sergeant B. T. N. Hutton said both women were covered in blood and received hospital treatment for their injuries. Barry John Shaw, aged 31. salesman, pleaded guilty to two charges of assault on females and a further charge of receiving stolen clothing valued at £lO3 15s. The police withdrew other charges.
Shaw was convicted on the charges he admitted and remanded till October 16 for a probation report and sentence. A psychiatric report is also to be obtained. Mr Hutton said that on the night of September 17, two girls had complained of being
assaulted at their flat When: seen by the police both girls: were bruised about the face and body and their clothes were covered in blood. Mr Hutton said Shaw had beaten one girl unconscious. When the other went to her assistance, Shaw produced a carving knife and said he was going to kill her. He pulled the knife across the latter’s throat and jabbed her in the stomach. This girl suffered small cuts to the throat and stomach. As a result of the assault, the first girl had suffered several blackouts. When interviewed later, Shaw was found to have bloodstains on the back of his hands. The stolen clothes were found on the premises at the same time. Shaw’s council, Mr K. Ryan, suggested he needed psychiatric treatment. He said Shaw had already been admitted to Oakley Hospital as a voluntary patient in 1957.
