Politicians Urged Take Only 6 p.c. Increase
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Oct. 8. The Shipwrights’ Union today urged Parliamentarians to defer acceptance of their 39 per cent pay increase and take 6 per cent in the meantime. A statement signed by the president of the union (Mr G. Broad) and the secretary (Mr T. Hill) said: “Parliamentarians by this selfdenial would set an example badly needed in the community at the present time.” Parliamentarians, unlike trade unionists, had given evidence for their wage claim in private. “How much of this evidence could be justified in public? The case for pay rises for judges and
top public servants was also decided in private.” There clearly were two sets of rules in New for the workers and the age beneficiaries and the other for “top people.” The statement said that if Parliamentarians accepted the 39 per cent increase, Mr Hill had been instructed to challenge any member of Parliament to public debate to justify the acceptance of the increase.
