FACTORY SHIPS
Economy Doubted The numbers of large factory ships would decline rather than increase. This was the view of delegates to the Food and Agriculture Organisation which met in Rome and discussed business decisions in fishery industries, last month, said the New Zealand delegate, Mr M. L. Newman, yesterday. Mr Newman returned on Wednesday. Delegates said very clearly that factory ships were not nearly as economical to operate as shore-based trawlers or trawlers that freeze, but did not process their catches at sea, he said. Mr Newman said that in some economies, governments might encourage this class of fishing by providing subsidies but normally, as in capitalistic economies where an industry had to pay its way, the tendency would be towards a decline in the number of factory ships, such as the . Rumanian ship, Constanza, which was fishing in waters off New Zealand recently.
