Commonwealth Scientists To Meet In N.Z.
The British Commonwealth Scientific Committee will meet in New Zealand next month. The committee is an official body composed of representatives of the governments of Commonwealth countries. It deals with matters connected with Commonwealth co-oper-ation in science. At this year’s meeting, 13 of the 19 member countries of the Commonwealth will be represented.
The representatives will assemble in Auckland on November 15 and before their business meeting at Massey University of Manawatu on November 23 and 24 they will visit Government research laboratories and large industrial concerns.
After their meeting, at which the chairman will be Dr. W. M. Hamilton, DirectorGeneral of the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research, the representatives will go to Wellington. There they will visit scientific institutions and meet the National Research Advisory Council. In the South Island the delegates will visit Lake Manapouri, Benmore, and the Hermitage, before returning to Christchurch to see the research work being carried out at Lincoln College and D.S.I.R. branches in the district. After the tour a small party will visit Antarctica. Four British scientists will also attend. They are Sir Henry Melville, secretary to the committee of the Privy Council for scientific and industrial research, Sir Gordon Cox, secretary of the Agricultural Research Council, Mr E. M. Nicholson, Nature Conservancy, and Dr. W. L. Francis, of the D.S.I.R.
