NEW YORK, Oct. 9. The “New York Times” reported from Paris today that China is reported to have told friendly African and Asian Governments she will explode her first atomic bomb sometime after the end of this month. The story quoted “qualified diplomatic sources.” It said the Chinese emphasised that their possession of the bomb would strengthen them against what they call the “imperialistic” powers.
The information was said to have been given to Guinea and Mali in Africa and Cambodia and Burma in Asia, among others. The “New York Times” said the Chinese were believed to have two purposes in giving advance news of the explosion.
One was to forestall criticism of their entry into the atomic race. This was to be done by saying the Chinese bomb would help the Chinese to help their friends around the world.
The other purpose was to prepare these nations for a new diplomatic offensive by the Peking regime in Africa and Asia.
