Hawke’s Exclusion 2nd Test Surprise
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
BOMBAY, October 9.
The Australian cricket selectors caused a shock today when they omitted the pace bowler, N. J. Hawke, in their three changes for the team to meet India in the second test at Bombay tomorrow.
Others out of the side which beat India in the first test at Madras earlier this week are the wicket-keeper, A. T. W. Grout, and a batsman, I. R. Redpath. The three incoming players are A. Connolly, R. Cowper and B. A. Jarman. The Australian team is: R. B. Simpson, W. M. Lawry, N. C. O’Neill, P. G. Burge, B. C. Booth, Cowper, T. R. Veivers, J. Martin, Jarman, G. D. Mckenzie, Connolly and Redpath. Grout, who suffered a hairline fracture in his jaw while keeping wickets in the first test, still has a swollen face. Redpath has been out of form in recent matches and did not impress in the first
test when he scored 10 and 0. Cowper’s inclusion is a wise move. He not only finished the tour of England with a blaze of runs, but he is a left-hander. His inclusion has given Australia four left-hand , batsmen—Lawry, Veivers, Martin and Cowper. The advent of so many lefthand batsmen will make it more difficult for the Indian attack which is based on slow left-arm spinners, Nadkarni and Durani. Both Nadkarni and Durrani dislike bowling to lefthanders and have had little success against them. It was Veivers and Martin who took to both of them in the first test, and hit Australia out of trouble.
