SURPRISE ON FIRST DAY

Club Champion Beaten (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 4. Eden-Rosktll, third from the bottom last season, caused a surprise on the opening day of the Auckland senior cricket championship on Saturday by beating Papatoetoe, the champion, by an innings in the sevenhour one-day mateh. Papatoetoe was bundled out for 55 in the first Innings. EdenRoskill scored 171 and then bowled Papatoetoe out for 94. R. S. Cunis, the New Zealand bowler, did most damage by taking five for 29 and six for 27. R. Baddeley took four for 22 and two for 33. The other games produced moderate scoring and few bowling performances of note. H. J. Howarth, the Auckland left-arm spinner, took six wickets for 91 for Western Suburbs against North Harbour. Results: Papatoetoe 55 and 94 lost to Eden-RoskiU 171 (p. B. McGregor 56: B. Bodie 4/56, W. Williams 3/38), by an innings and 22 runs. Grafton 112 (M. de Lautour 38: R. Sutton 5/38) and 34/3 lost on the first innings to Eastern 140/3 dec (W. Middleton 45). Western Suburbs 243/9 dec. <W. Norman 57, J. Turnbull 48, R. Warren 46, H. Howarth 45) beat North Harbour 211 (B. Postles 48, C. Maingay 40; H. Howarth 6/91, on the first innings.

University 138 (J. Sparling 52; J. Millener 4/30) and 33/1, lost on the first innings to Cornwall 159 (B. Cooper 4/32).
