“ALARM” AT PRICES
Stabilisation Sought (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 4. Alarmed at “the rapid increase in the cost of living, both before and after the 6 per cent General Wage Order” the Engineers' Union is approaching the Government seeking price stabilisation, said a statement from the union today. The decision to approach the Government came after the biggest meeting ever held by the union in the Auckland Trades Hall this week, said the statement.
“Failing . this stabilising, this union will have no alternative- but to review its policies on the wage increases necessary to maintain a reasonable standard of living for its members. “We fully endorse the recent statements made by the president of the Federation of Labour on this vital issue.” In a recent statement, the F.O.L. -president (Mr T. E. Skinner) said his executive was empowered to apply for a further General Wage Order unless the Government within the next three weeks imposed price control or stabilised the cost of living.
