Forest Reserve Threatened

A big scrub fire, fanned by a strong nor’-wester, was roaring up the slopes of Mount Fyffe, five miles north of Kaikoura, late last evening. It was getting close to the forestry climatic reserve on the mountain, and the Kaikoura Fire Brigade had been called out and assistance had also been sent from the forestry camp at Balmoral. The fire was on the property of Mr E. C. Brown. It started yesterday morning from the remains of a burn-ing-off fire set the previous day. Fanned by the wind, it spread quickly through the scrub, and by late last evening it was clearly visible from Kaikoura as the flames climbed high up the mountain towards the trees.
