Government Steps In
(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright/ NEW YORK, Oct. 4, Dockers returned to work along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts yesterday under a Federal Government order which ended their twoday strike. Picket lines were withdrawn yesterday after a Federal Judge ordered the men back for 10 days. Another order, postponing strike action for a further 70 days, is expected to be made next week under the Taft-Hartley labour legislation which regulates strikes detrimental to the national interest. The strike resulted from a deadlock in contract' negotiations between shippers and the International Longshoreman’s Association, principally over proposals to reduce the size of work gangs. Employers say modern techniques mean fewer men are needed.
