ANCIENT WRECKS

Search Off Turkey CT Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ISTANBUL. A two-man submarine has begun a search off Turkey's west coast for wrecks of ancient ships. The four-ton submarine Arborah is being used by 15 archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania for a study of sea transport in the pre- ( hristian period. Lobster-shaped mechanical claws mounted on the exterior of the 16-foot-long submarine grope along the seabed off Yassi island, off Bodrum, for relics of the ancient craft. Arborah. built by the General Dynamics Corporation at Groton, Connecticut, has a speed of about four miles an hour and can dive as deep as 200 metres (about 650 feet). She can remain submerged for five hours at a time. A ton of electric batteries provides power for two propellers, the mechanical claws, lights and telephone. Arborah was built for research and exploration work at a cost of 80,000 dollars (nearly £30,000). She represents a modification of the one-man submarine Star I, built by the same firm, which underwent extensive operational tests in the Atlantic last year.

The American archaeologists hope that they will be able to retrieve parts of Egyptian ships which sanks more than 2000 years ago off the coast of Bodrum. With her electronic arms, the vessel will be able to carry finds to the surface. Hitherto fishermen have occasionally brought up historic finds in their nets and divers have brought to light pieces of historic value which were lying no deeper than 120 feet From now on, research work will be carried out much more thoroughly. At the spot where Arborah will work, the famous bronze bust of the goddes Dementer was found in a sponge dragger’s net.

He was taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital for treatment and was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital
