STAMP STORY
on a one-shilling stamp of the Solomon Islands first issued in 1956. Pitcairn’s first stamps were Issued in 1940. Even now the post office is normally open only twice a week. When a ship calls, however, there is a scene of great activity as the mail is prepared. With practically no exports, tiny Pitcairn—area: two square miles— relies for most of its needs from overseas bn the proceeds from sales of its postage stamps to collectors throughout the world. Ships’ passengers, too, often make a point of buying the stamps to keep as a memento of their visit to the island made famous by a mutiny of long ago. So when anyone puts a stamp like this in his album, he has the satisfaction not only of adding an unusually interesting item to the collection but also of helping to Support the economy of a faraway community in the Pacific.
