SYDNEY, October 2. More than 2000 persons today watched Princess Marina open the £4 million Gladesville bridge over the Parramatta river between the suburbs of Gladesville and Drummoyne. The bridge, which has a span of 1000 feet, was begun in 1959. It has the largest single concrete arch span in the world. It will form part of an extensive bridge and expressway system for the northern areas of Sydney.
As the Princess drove along the bridge approach before the opening about 400 people jumped a barrier and entered the area reserved for official guests. Within a minute all the vacant seats in the official enclosure were occupied by the crowd. Princess Marina was cheered when she left her car and walked through a guard of honour of 100 senior girls from nearby Riverside Girls’ High School. When she cut the ribbon and officially opened the bridge the crowd cheered again.
