‘VALUABLE TO AUST.’

B.H.P. Steel Defended (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, Oct. 2. Broken Hill Proprietary, Ltd. was carrying on constantly with a “tremendous plan of expansion,” the Trade and Industry Minister, Mr McEwen, said yesterday. He commended the company’s attitude to supply of steel to the domestic market as well as maintaining exports to some overseas markets. Mr McEwen was replying, to a question by Mr Connor (Lab., N.S.W.). Mr Connor said the Minister had said that national control of B.H.P. was undesirable. He asked Mr McEwen to indicate what steps were proposed to ensure steel needs of Australia were fully met by B.H.P. and the available export markets were fully exploited. Mr McEwen said: “The Government regards B.H.P. as a very valuable institution in the Australian economic scene. “The Australian economy is greatly indebted to this company for furnishing tremendous quantities of steel at an increasing rate of production at a low cost by world standards.” It had supplied most of its production to Australian needs, while .not allowing New Zealand to go without supply, or allowing export markets achieved at great effort to wither.
