WANTED TO RESIGN

Auckland Fire Unit Drivers (N Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND, Sept. 29. Twenty firemen-drivers of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Brigade today gave notice that they wished to be relieved of driving duties, but they later agreed to postpone their resignations for seven days after discussions with the chief fire officer (Mr L. F. Wilson).

The move arose from what the Auckland Fire Brigadesmen’s Union described as “extravagant and sweeping” statements made in a meeting of the board on Monday. Members of the board criticised the driving of some of the men and were told that one of the brigade's vehicles, a utility van, had had its gear lever broken and replaced 16 times. The chairman of the board (Mr G. A. Gleadow) claimed the discussion by the board had been misreported, but said tonight that he wished to withdraw any criticism of the drivers’ ability.
