TROTTING Flying Maiden, Dorstan For Hutt Park Double

Flying Maiden and Dorstan could form the successful doubles combination on the second night of the Wellington Trotting Club’s September meeting at Hutt Park Raceway today. Flying Maiden recorded her fourth second placing from five starts this season when she was beaten by Snow Globe on the first night of the meeting, while Dorstan gained her second win from four starts this term when she beat Danny’s Pal in the Adios Handicap.

Flying Maiden’s exasperating run of placings must come to an end soon. She . looks favourably placed on the front of the Worthy Queen Handicap tonight and with average luck in the running she should just about win. She meets Snow Globe on 12 yards more favourable terms in this race and if she makes the most of her advantage, she will take beating.

Snow Globe has won at three of her four starts this season and appears to be much more solid than in the past. On Saturday she raced in behind instead of adopting her usual role of pacemaker and she ran on in fine style over the final furlong.

Snow Globe, a member of D. G. Nyhan’s Templeton team, is usually a brilliant beginner and it will not surprise if she is handily placed after 50 yards. It will be most surprising if she fails to give a good account of herself once more.

Pohutukawa gave a mixed display in the first half-mile of Saturday’s race, but once properly balanced he unwound a brilliant run which carried him into fourth position at the finish. Pohutukawa has never been noted for consistency, but when caught in a generous mood he has few peers among the trotters. If he makes no mistakes he should be too good for most in this field in spite of his handicap of 36 yards. Astralight, another good front-runner, showed that he was returning to his best form when he finished third to Snow Globe and Flying Maiden. He was well beaten in at the finish, being five lengths behind the second horse. Even so he will not be without a chance.

Little Smoke made up a lot of ground for fifth on Saturday. She is not very reliable, but is in great order at present and could surprise. Ali Bey met trouble and broke on Saturday. He was not a danger afterwards and finished sixth. Ali Bey has won twice so far this season and he could easily upset calculations if he produces one of his peak runs. A win for any of the others

would be a major upset. The pick of them could be Control, which has not raced very impressively lately. Second Leg Dorstan won with ease in the Adios Handicap on Saturday and the rise in class in the Moera Handicap, the second leg of the double, should not trouble her greatly. She has struck a solid patch of form in the last few weeks and has not been guilty of a bad race. The only occasion on which she failed to return a dividend this season was in a race in which she was badly checked. Spencer’s consistency assures him of solid support. He has been placed in his three starts this season. He was second to Ahumai on the first night of the meeting, and second to Adioway at Auckland a week earlier. He is fairly reliable and from No. 3 at the barrier he should be favourably placed all the way. Spring Garrison held on for third to Ahumai and Spencer on Saturday after leading, into the straight. Tonight’s race will be two furlongs shorter, a factor which could assist him to race prominently once more. Miriam Hall was rather unlucky when fourth on the first night of the meeting as she was late securing a run. She is racing most generously at present and should be capable of another bold showing. She will be bracket-

ed with Victory a useful sixth on Saturday. Pancho Boy, like Miriam Hall, will start from 12 yards. He was badly placed throughout Saturday’s race and finished full of running in ninth position. He won at Addington a week earlier and could return to that form in this race. Ahumai has gone back to 24 yards as a result of her win on Saturday and she will need a lot of luck if she is to get into the finish again. However, she appeals as much as any of the others on the front. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be fast.
