CLUNG TO BRANCH

Fatal Plunge Over Cliff (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, Sept. 28. A young Hastings woman grabbed the branch of a tree and pulled herself to safety as the vehicle she was in took a fatal plunge off the road near Puketapu yesterday. Bruised and cut, she was flung to the ground as the Landrover rolled to the bottom of a 100 ft bank, killing the driver. The woman, Miss Georgina Freda Flight, aged 22, of King street, Hastings, ran a mile to get help for the driver. When help arrived he was found dead. He was Te Rongonui Ngatai, aged 22, a single man from Rangitukia, near Ruatoria. The accident happened at 10.15 a.m. on the Waihau road about seven miles from Puketapu. As the vehicle left the road the door on Miss Flight’s side flew open and she snatched at the branch of a tree as they shot past. Both she and the driver were members of a shearing gang.
