FIGHTING FINISH

Charles Out Of The Money (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) I SEATTLE (Washington). September 27. J New Zealand’s R. J. Charles finished well down the list with 280 and out of the money today in the Greater Seattle Open golf tournament. Billy Caspar of California shot a six-under-par 64 on the final round to win by two strokes with a 72-hole score of 265. Mason Rudolph of Tennessee matched Casper's 64 today and finished second with 267. Al Geiberger was third with 268 and tied for fourth at 269 were Dudley Wysong and Chuck Cougdon. Charles wound up today’s round in a blaze of glory, shooting an eagle three on the final hole, but his effort went for nought. The left-hander hammered two long wood shots on the 500-yard 18th hole and sank an eight-foot putt for a round of 71. Trees lining the narrow fairways of the Broadmoor course gave Charles trouble all the way, even costing him a double-bogey six on the ninth hole. He also had two bogeys and a birdie on the front side for a 37, three over par. His eagle put him two under for the return trip with a 34. Charles’ earlier rounds were 65. 70 and 74. Charles said he would play in the next event on the tournament trail, the Fresno, California, Open.
