No Longer Sterile

(NJ!. Press Association-Copyright)

BIRMINGHAM, Sept. 28. Seven women with a rare condition that made them sterile have given birth to healthy babies after a new form of treatment pioneered at two Birmingham hospitals. A gynaecologist described the treatment as “a major breakthrough.” The women, suffering from amenorrhea (failure to menstruate received a protracted series of injections of an extract from the pituitary glands of dead persons.

The extract—gonadotrovhin—is .a hormone which acts on the ovaries. Produced by a costly and complex series of processes at Cambridge University and Birmingham it is injected over 18 months. Ten women from all parts of Britain referred to the Birmingham and Midland Hospital for women, and the Queen Elizabeth hospital, all conceived. Three of the babies died.
