OVERSEAS MAIL UP

WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. Overseas mail rates will increase when local postal charges go up on Thursday. Air mail rates will rise by up to 3d. Surface mail rates to Commonwealth countries will continue to be in line with inland rates and therefore increase also, and the same increases will be extended to rates for mail to other countries.

Thus, the surface letter rate to Commonwealth countries will rise from 3d to 4d, and the same Id increase will be added to mail for foreign destinations.

Air letters to Britain, now Is 9d for half an ounce, will be 2s. Lesser rates will be increased proportionately for other destinations and the actual charges will be announced by the Chief Postmaster.

Many will Increase by Id; some, where the Post Office has found present costing adequate, will not be raised.

Aerogramme rates to Britain will be Increased from 8d to 9d, and to Australia from 6d to 7d. Parcel rates, which were increased some months ago, will not be changed.
