FAIRFORD IN STAKES
Quoted At Long Odds Today

The New Zealand three-year-old Fairford, which will be trying to emulate the feat of Even Stevens in winning the Caul-field-Melbourne Cup double for his owner, is quoted at long odds for his first start in Australia tomorrow. Owned by Mr J. Wattle of Hastings, the owner of Even Stevens, Fairford is to run in the Moonee Valley Stakes. Fairford, which finished seventh in the Wanganui Guineas at his last start, has Impressed in his work since his arrival in Melbourne. One of his main rivals tomorrow could be the New Zea-land-bred colt Gabadan. now trained in Sydney. Gabadan, which has scored several wins in Sydney, is still at good odds. Favourites in the £5OOO event are Boeing Boy, which won the Sires’ Produce Slakes, and the South Australian L’Orage.
St. Ambrose Progeny
•‘The Press” Special Service MATAMATA. September 24. The first progeny of the imported stallion, St. Ambrose, was born at Matamata yesterday. A chestnut colt, he is out of Gay Christine and is a halfbrother to the Royal Stakes winner, Superfine, now in Victoria. Another half-brother is the useful Superfine. St. Ambrose is the second son of Aureole to come to New Zealand. The first of the progeny of the Precipitation horse, Ayrshire Bard, was born this week. He is a chestnut colt from Autowin, a mare by Boissier from Our Love, a daughter of the great brood mare. Sunbride. Autowin is owned by Mr R. Black, of Matamata.
Royal Crescent s First Foal "The Press" Special Service MATAMATA. September 24. The high class mare, Royal Crescent, had her first foal this week, a bay or brown colt by Final Court. Royal Crescent was one of the best sprinters in the North and was trained for many of her wins by the Cambridge trainer. J. A. Mitchell He was given the mare not long before the death of her owner, Mr J. Courtney, and the foal is his. Elrann, the dam of the outstanding staying mare. Bridie, has had a black colt foal to Gigantic.
M. Smith To Train For C. W. Ansford <N Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N.. Sept. 24. The Foxton trainer, M. Smith, will move to Stratford next week to take up an appoint, ment as private trainer to Mr C. W. Ansford. He will prepare Mr Ansford's team from the stables’ formerly occupied bv R. A. Tudor. Smith, who will start work at his new quarters on October 1. took out a training licence about four years ago to assist with the preparation of the late Mr K. Carters team. At present Mr Ansford has six horses ready to go into full work. This number will shortly be increased by several untried juveniles.
