Always Working
Mrs M. F. Wilby, Head Teacher at the Merivale Lane Occupation Centre, since 1961, has done a great deal to help intellectually handicapped children. Her work for the Centre extends far beyond that of a teacher and she is widely known for her fund raising and other activities for the Centre.
“Mrs Wilby,—she’s nothing more than a human dynamo," remarked one businessman. “She does a wonderful job for those kids. I don’t know where they would be without her.”
Because of her tact and understanding she is very popular with the children attending the Centre. She watches the progress of each child with great interest.
Mrs Wilby studied experimental psychology and education at the Otago and Canterbury Universities. At the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College she specialised in rural and infant teaching. She began her teaching career at New Brighton District High School, did country teaching in the North Island and then went to Melbourne as an exchange teacher. On her return she did further rural teaching before joining the Timaru South School. There Mrs Wilby started a special class for backward children—an event which was to influence her future considerably. She was appointed to her present post as headteacher of the centre in Merivale lane in 1961.
