Exchange Of Seeds
IN.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 24. Seed from New Zealand native trees has been sent by air as a goodwill gesture from the New Zealand Gov-, ernment to Japan. The Minister of Forests (Mr Gerard) said today he had received an invitation from the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Japan, Mr Naka Funada, to participate in a scheme to commemorate the holding of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Seed is being collected from every country participating
in the Olympics for the purpose of planting seedlings all over Japan as a symbol of international friendship. Mr Gerard said when the New Zealand team arrived in Tokyo, one of the early duties of the team manager, Mr W. A. Stevenson, would be to hand over the seed, which, in the meantime, was at the New Zealand Embassy. Nineteen species are represented in the collection. The trees selected were suited to a variety of growing conditions. They include: kowhai, pohutukawa, kauri, totara, rewarewa, ngaio, silver and red beech and kahikatea. In return the Japanese Land Afforestation Committee plans to present to New Zealand through the Olympic team, seed of Japanese trees such as Cinnimomum champhora, Pinus densiflora and Abies mayriana as a memento of the team’s visit.
Found It—A dustman, Andre Violi, sifted the garbage in the city dump for three days after his daughter threw his winning tote racing ticket in the dustbin. Determination was rewarded yesterday when he found the slip, worth 13,900 francs (nearly £1000). Metz (France), September 24.
