Costs Dropping In Britain

(NZ. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 24

Salesmen for nuclear power stations would be on New Zealand’s doorstep very shortly, Sir John Cockcroft said in Auckland tonight. He said he was surprised American salesmen were not here already. The four nuclear power stations in Britain, he said, were all working better than had been expected. The unit cost had dropped 40 per cent since the first station had been built and would drop 30 per cent with succeeding stations. Three more stations would be in use shortly, and by 1968 Britain would have five million kilowatts produced by nuclear power. The figure would be doubled by 1975. The unit cost in 1970 was expected to be down to .35d. That should be the time, Sir John said, when New Zealand should consider building a nuclear power station. “If the low-cost levels that have been prophesied are true you can make up your minds about nuclear power,” he said.

Sir John and Lady Cockcroft left Auckland by air tonight for Britain after a short holiday visit to New Zealand.
