Constable Says He Lit “Reefer” At Party
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Sept. 24. Three men and one woman had smoked a marijuana “reefer” on a Newton backyard lawn during a party, a constable told the police court today. Constable M. J. Muddiman said he had been invited to smoke a “reefer” at the party, and had provided the match to light it. He was giving evidence of charges concerning dangerous drugs against two men and a woman. Colin Dixon, aged 35, cleaner, and Lloyd Thomas Herewini, aged 31, driver, appeared together, charged with possessing marijuana on June 20. A 21-year-old waitress, whose name was suppressed, was also charged with possessing marijuana on June 20. The three accused elected trial by jury. Constable Muddiman said that during the party, a man named Bennett had accompanied him out of kitchen door on to the lawn, and had taken from his pocket what appeared to be a reefer. “Smoked In Turn” Constable Muddiman said Herewini then came out, and Bennett said to him: “Would you dig a joint, man (smoke a reefer).” Herewini had replied: “God, I should hope so.” Bennett had lit the reefer, and it was then smoked in
turn by Bennett, himself (Muddiman) and Herewini. The constable said the waitress had joined the groups, inhaled once from the “reefer,” and had returned inside after a violent coughing fit. The hearing is before justices. The three accused pleaded not guilty and were committed for trial at the Supreme Court in October. Each was allowed £lOO bail.
