As Big As Cats

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PORT MORESBY, Sept. 24.

Giant rats whose bodies are up to 2ft long have been found in the territory by the Archbold expedition from the American Museum of Natural History, in New York. The rats are of a type unique to New Guinea. The expedition, led by Mr Hobart van Deusen, the museum’s curator of mammals, is working in New Guinea’s Huon peninsula north of Lae. Members of the expedition, which is the sixth sent to the territory since < 1933, regard the rats as a I very rare capture and say they are particularly glad to add them to their extensive collection of more than 1000 mammals caught this trip. The expedition has been in the Huon peninsula since April.
