LIST

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright/ CANBERRA, September 24. In the Australian Federal Parliament debate, the leader of the Opposition (Mr Arthur Calwell) gave this list of misadventures, which, he said, had created widespread public concern over the quality of naval administration in recent years: In July, 1958, 11.M.A.5. Vendatta, the sister-ship of the illfated Voyager, crashed into the dock gates at the Williamstown naval dockyard. In September, 1960, H.M.A.S. Anzac holed 11.M.A.5. Tobruk during gunnery exercises. On September 11, 1960, two sailors died when the ammunition carrier H.M.A.S.

Woomera exploded 20 miles off Sydney when dumping obsolete ammunition.

In May, 1963, the frigate 11.M.A.5. Queensborough and the British submarine Tabard collided off Jervis Bay.

In October, 1963, five young naval officers from 11.M.A.5. Sydney lost their lives when a whaleboat tried to sail round Hook and Hayman islands off the Queensland coast.

In January, 1964, H.M.A.S. Supply, the Navy’s new 15,000 ton tanker, almost sank, stern first, off Garden Island.

He then referred to the Melbourne-Voy-ager collision.
