Mail Notices
Sir.—Having occasion frequently to post parcels overseas. I have used the mall
notices published in “The Press” as an accurate guide to posting dates. The column is headed: “Mail closes at the Chief Post Office, Christchurch, as follows . . ~” and states in relation to surface mail that “unless otherwise indicated, second-class mails close at 10 a.m. the previous day.” On Friday, September 18, I took a parcel for Europe to the local post office, where the qlerk, who was very helpful, found, on consulting his list, that parcel mail had closed at 10 a.m. that day, although in the published list the closing time for surface mail, first class, was given as 2 p.m. on Monday, September 21. He also stated that this time and date applied to Wellington, not to Christchurch, according to his notice. It is important that one should be able to rely on printed information if mail is to arrive in time for special dates.—Yours, etc., G.B.W.
September 20, 1964. [The Chief Postmaster, Christchurch (Mr J. W. Lincoln), replies: “When a firstclass mail is closed on a Monday, the second-class portion (parcel mail) is closed on the previous working day, Friday. The closing times indicated on the Christchurch mail notice at all times relate to closing times at this office. A reminder is accordingly being circulated to sub-offices.”]
