The Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) left Wellington yesterday for Japan, where he will spend 16 days inspecting railways and manufacturing works. He is accompanied by the General Manager of Railways (Mr A. T. Gandell).—(P.A.) The Bishop of VictoriaNyanza (the Rt. Rev. M. L. Wiggins) is to return to Christchurch on furlough from October 10. The bishop will be accompanied by his wife. He will preach at the Dunedin Synod shortly after his return, and later in the month at the Christchurch Synod. He will return to his diocese in January. Dr. Stanley Greenhill, director of an unusual family study programme for third-year medical students at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, will visit New Zealand in February to address the B.M.A. conference and the College of General Practitioners on his programme.— (P.A.) Mr K. G. Smith, a wellknown New Zealand cornetist and conductor, has been appointed musical director of the St. Kilda Municipal Band. He will take over from Mr Elgar Clayton, who is retiring, on October 7. (P.A.) Professor D. B. Sawyer, head of the mathematics department at the University of Otago, has been appointed professor of mathematics and deputy vice-chancellor at the new University of Waikato.— (P.A.) Mr J. D. Rose, of Epsom, Auckland, a general manager with Fletcher Holdings, Ltd., has been selected as the New Zealand 1965 Eisenhower exchange fellow.—(P.A.) Miss Eleanor R. Borrowdale has been appointed United States Consul at Wellington and Mr David G. Wilson, jun., has been appointed to a similar position at Auckland.—(P.A.) Sergeant J, Brooker, of the Southern Military District Construction Troop of the Royal New Zealand Engineers, received his long service and good conduct medal at a special ceremony at Addington yesterday. Sergeant Brooker, who has been- in. the Army for more than 19 years, was presented with the medal by the commander of the Southern Military District (Brigadier T. C. Campbell). Dr. P. F. Sheppard, resident assistant physician, Christchurch Hospital, has been appointed visiting assistant physician to the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
