Spring Art Show

The Canterbury Society of Arts’ spring exhibition for associate working members was opened last evening by ■the president of the society (Mr. P. Pascoe). The exhibition comprises nearly 200 paintings arid drawings and a number of sculptures and ceramics.

Mr Pascoe said that in holding the exhibition the society was paying attention to the aims of the society, which were to promote the study and practice of art and interest in art. “When we have an exhibition of this nature we are fulfilling our function,” he said.

Mr Pascoe said that artists were amateurs and as such were essential in any society. They created extensions of themselves by constantly striving beyond themselves.

The exhibition was open to members of the society who paint but are not full working members of the society. They were entitled to submit works without selection. '

The exhibition will be open until Sunday, October. 4.
