CARTAGE RATES

2’ p.c. Increase Approved

Applications for an increase in cartage rates to cover costs resulting from the 6 per cent general wage order have been granted by the Commissioner of Transport (Mr R. J. Polaschek). He has granted an increase of 21 per cent in all cartage schedules.

An application for an increase was made on behalf of rural cartage contractors by the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance, and the New Zealand Carrier’s Federation applied on behalf of urban carriers. ■ A spokesman for the carrying trade said last evening that the increases were allowed on all scheduled rates, but there was still a margin for competition, and the increase would not apply where there was a contract. The increase will apply immediately. but up to October 9 has been allowed for appeals.
