“Unhappy Picture”
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 10. Increasing numbers of women were appearing before courts, said the senior woman probation officer at Auckland, Miss E. Avenel!, at the conference of Roman Catholic prison chaplains. “It is a v r v unhappy picture,” she ’. Women hau a protected place in the community and they often used this to their own advantage, said Miss Avenel!. Newspapers seemed to magnify offences by women, such as prostitution and shoplifting. In the greater Auckland area, from Auckland, Otahuhu, Papakura, and Pukekohe, 160 women were on probation, she said. It was significant that quite a few girls had been involved in robbery with violence. Since 1948, seven women had been sent to prison in New Zealand for murder.
