POPULATION EXPLOSION

W. Samoa Has Problem (N.Z. Pres* Association) AUCKLAND, Sept 10. The population explosion taking place in Western Samoa presented tremendous problems in increasing production and revenue earnings, the assistant-secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce (Mr M. J. Moriarty) said in Auckland today after a two-week inspection of the islands. “Fifty per cent of the population of 120,000 is aged 14 and under, requiring an immense outlay for education, hospitals and other things which are not immediately productive,” he said. “This is a tremendous explosion in a small group of islands. You can see the problem absolutely starkly—as great, in proportion, as anywhere in the world.” Mr Moriarty went to Samoa at the request of the Western Samoan Government to advise it on marketing arrangements. He said it was encouraging to see the way the Government was facing up to economic development works.
