SEVERE TESTS

British motoring correspondents were recently shown inside Vauxhatl’s test ground in England, the motoring correspondent of “The Times” reports. Some of the tests they saw included the usual cobblestones and banked circuits, but there were some that were exceptionally severe.

In one test, cars are driven at speed over a concrete ditch 2jft wide and 9in deep, giving the suspension a terrific battering. In a commercial vehicle test, a lorry was jacked up so one rear wheel was off the ground, and the engine was taken to peak revs, in first gear. The spinning wheel was then allowed to drop onto the ground, giving the transmission system a very severe jolt. This was repeated several times. The fruits of some of the testing will be seen in models to be introduced later this year, the correspondent says.
