PRIORITY SYSTEM

Association Displeased The Canterbury School Committees’ Association is still not satisfied with the new scheme for bringing basic equipment in schools up to standard. The Education Department recently announced its intention of meeting all deficiencies over a six-year period. New schools will be completely equipped at the outset and others will receive attention out of the residue in the annual national allocation. It is the method of determining priority which displeases the association. Last year all schools were invited to list priorities and the top one (duplicators) was chosen as the item for issue. Schools which had duplicators were not allowed another item in that year. Last evening the association expressed the hope that more flexibility would be allowed in future. It could not see why schools could not get the item they needed most. It was also mentioned that some committees had bought on subsidy all items in the basic equipment list and would get no benefit from the new grant. “The Education Department had to start somewhere and we should not complain if a better system is now promised,” said a delegate.
