HOSTEL FOR MAORIS

Presbytery Support The Christchurch Presbytery agreed to support an appeal for the enlargement of the Turakina Maori Girls’ Hostel in the Wanganui Presbytery. If the appeal is approved the Christchurch Presbytery will be asked to provide £3500 towards the initial costs of the project. The complete enlargement would cost approximtely £70,000, of which £30,000 would be provided by the Maori Trust Fund and £40,000 by presbyteries throughout New Zealand. The Rev. W. J. Schrader, speaking against the motion of support, said that it could be questioned if the money and man-power needed would be being used in the best way for both education and the Maori people. The extensions envisaged, he said, would have been appropriate a few years ago but could be outmoded in their use today. He also thought that the presbytery should not undertake to support such an appeal when it had not met its own budget allocations for the work of the whole church.
