WATCH FOR HEMP

Destruction Powers (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 9. Customs, health and police officers had power to seize and destroy hemp plants under the Dangerous Drugs Amendment, 1960, the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Talboys) said in the House of Representatives. He said he was not aware that any illegal plantings had been found recently. Sir Talboys was replying to a question from Mrs E. I. Tombleson (Government, Gisborne) who asked if his department had taken any steps for its specialist weed control officers to assist in checking for such plants, and if a strict watch was kept on all sources of seed supply at ports of entry. Mr Talboys said hemp seed could not be imported without the express approval of the Director-General of Agriculture.
