RACING Newbrook And Magician Sprint Fast In Training
Newbrook and Magician, stablemates and rivals at Ashburton next Saturday, sprinted seven furlongs in smart time on the No. 1 grass at Riccarton yesterday. They will meet in the Spring Handicap, the second leg of the Ashburton double.
Galloping was done on the No. 1 grass which gave fast footing. Several trialists had a north-westerly breeze behind them in the home straight. Later, when the breeze turned to an easterly, trialists were able to make fast times in the early stages of their gallops. Magician (Traecey) and Newbrook (C. T. Wilson) had their race riders up when they sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 28sec, the first three brilliantly in 36 3-ssec. They stayed on terms to the end of a good gallop. Valuate (W. Martin) and Barwood (Collins) recorded Imin 28 4-ssec for seven furlongs and 49 2-ssec for the last half-mile.
Valuate runs against the in the Spring Handicap at Ashburton. Unless
the ground becomes heavy he will probably find seven furlongs too short. Carat (Daly) and Gold Find (Swanson) sprinted seven furlongs in Imin 28 2-5 sec, the last half-mile in 50 3-ssec.
Shipmate (Stokes) was allowed to dawdle away from the mile and remained under a good hold to the end. He recorded Imin 45sec, and when allowed to lengthen stride about half-way through ran the last half-mile in 50sec. He seems assured of the position of favourite for the John Grigg Stakes on Saturday.
Sound Gallop Though they were slow over the first furlong, Frigid (A. H. Eastwood) and Coral Prince (Stechmann) ran a mile in Imin 44 l-ssec, and the last half-mile in 50sec. They finished a length and a half clear of Frolicsome (C. T. Wilson), which beat Waif (Hadfield) by three lengths. William David (Stechmann) and Clipper (A. Martin) were abreast after running nine furlongs in Imin 56sec. Foxchief (Swanson) joined in near the seven furlongs and, by running his last half-mile in 50 2-ssec, finished with a lead of two lengths. Tidal Wave (Collins) started in a gap behind William David and Clipper and kept about the same distance all the way.
Hullabaloo (A. 11. Eastwood) and Charlborough (N. Eastwood) followed in Imin 15 2-ssec, and Corkscrew (Campbell) and Colonel’s Lady (C. T. Wilson) in Imin 18 2-ssec, the last- half-mile in 49 4-ssec. Status Symbol (L. McGuire) improved a length or so near the end to finish six furlongs almost on terms with Massakai in Imin 16 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 48 3-ssec. Winscombe (F. H. Skelton) and Bunker (Collins) sprinted six furlongs on terms in Imin 7 l-ssec, the last four in 49 Knight of York (Wildermoth) and Research (Hadfield) were two of. the more impressive trialists o.ver half a mile. They reeled off the distance in 47 4-ssec. Seaend (Miss F. Kerr) ran half a mile down the back in 49 2-ssec. She appears to have thrived since her sprint victory at Ashburton last Saturday week. Other half-mile gallops were:— Ashleigh (A. H. Eastwood), 50 4-ssec; Apparel (Traecey), 54 l-ssec; Keep (Reriti) and Channel Fleet (E. Wilson), 51sec; Alten Fiord (E. Wilson) and Trold (Reriti), 49 2-ssec: Smuggler’s Bank (Finlayson) and Big Boy (Brunning) clear of Golden Howe (Messent), 50se«; Scribbler (McGuire) and Prince Callan (C. McDonald), 51 l-ssec; Standout (Wildermoth), 50 l-ssec; Royal Leigh (E. Wilson), 52 l-ssec; Spartacus (Daly), 53sec; Jan’s Joy and Flashest, 49 2-ssec; Yacker (Telfer) and Disguised (Hadfield), 52sec; Mister Bud (F. H. Skelton) and Opportunity (Campbell), 50 2-ssec.
