DEARTH OF OFFICERS

Job May Be Advertised

There were some embarrassing silences at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Swimming Centre last evening when nominations were called for the positions of secretary, treasurer and local officer.

The secretary-treasurer (Mr T. J. Whitta) had signified that he would relinquish his posts at the annual meeting; the local officer (Mr D. M. Stuart) resigned earlier in the year. When nominations closed no names had been received and when the president (Mr M. R. Duckmanton) called for nominations from the floor of the meeting there was no response. Eventually a nomination for local officer was made and accepted, but the posts of secretary and treasurer were called twice to no avail. Miss Doreen Brown, a life member, said the Auckland centre had experienced the same trouble and had settled it by deciding on a fee and advertising the position. Mr J. H. Johnson then asked Mr Whitta to carry on “in the meantime’’ while the incoming executive investigated advertising the post. Mr Whitta agreed to this course.

The election of officers took 40 minutes. Those elected were: President, Mr M. R. Duckmanton: vice-president, Mr E. C. Stentiford: secretary-trea-surer, Mr T. J. Whitta: local officer, Mr J. H. Drummond; delegate to the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Mr Stentiford: educational officer, Mr M. J. Daniels: handicapper, Mr R. W. H. Luscombe: official watch tester, Mr K. H. Bartlett; representative to the Water Polo Control Board, Mr S. Williams: selectors, Messrs B. E. MacKenzie, Luscombe, D. W. Cain. Chairmen of committees appointed were: Championships and tours, Mr Stentiford; coaching and teaching, Mr Williams; publicity and records, Mr G. E. Ferguson: carnivals, Mr Drummond: social, Mrs B. Jones; finance, Mr Whitta. The selectors will choose a chairman from among their number.
