AIRLINE DEFICIT
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, Sept 8. Rear-Admiral Sir Matthew Slattery, who last year was removed from the chairmanship of the State-owned British Overseas Airways Corporation, yesterday joined a Labour attack on the Government in what appeared to be the makings of a major political storm over the running of the airline. Sir Matthew Slattery, who was replaced by Sir Giles Guthrie last December, said at the Farnborough air show
the Government had made him the scapegoat. “I was fired,” he said, and accused the Government of a “lack of guts.” He said the Government had “ratted” on what had been “a wonderful partnership” between B O.A.C. chairmen and successive air ministers. The storm clouds appeared yesterday after a newspaper report that 8.0.A.C. had made a record £lO million profit in 1963-64, bringing an accusation that it had been achieved before a Government-ordered shake-up in the airline’s leadership that year. The report suggested that 8.0.A.C., which has yet to make a profit, could break even on the year’s working.
