» SEPTEMBER X UNDER GLASS v Put bedding plants out into frames to harden. X Feed hydrangeas in pots. x Repot and pot on plants as necessary. ft Prick off seedling plants. 2 Start dahlia tubers into growth and take cuttings, ft Continue to sow seed of tender and half-hardy 3 annuals. M Pot off rooted chrysanthemum cuttings. (? Strike coleus cuttings. 7 Repot ferns and palms. x Sow marrow and pumpkin seed. x Plant out tomatoes under glass early in the month ft and pot those for planting outside, giving 2 plenty of air and light. ft Vines in unheated houses should be starting to J grow. *) OUT-OF-DOORS ft Sow down new lawns, hardy annuals and main x crop vegetables. ft Complete pruning of roses. 2 Give attention to herbaceous borders, dividing the ft plants where necessary, and thinning out exS cessive growth. Give the border a heavy v manuring. <r Plant gladioli and violets, and early potatoes, cab7. bage and cauliflower. ft Graft fruit trees. X OCTOBER V UNDER GLASS ft Continue potting and repotting plants as necessary. 3 Harden off tender bedding plants. w As azaleas go out of flower, pick off the old flower (? spikes to prevent seeding, syringe the plants v and keep them in a warm moist atmosphere f until growth is completed. Then place them in 7 a sheltered position out-of-doors. ft Keep a constant watch for insect and fungoid 2 pests and spray or fumigate early. ft Thoroughly harden off tomato plants for outside. ? OUT-OF-DOORS 7 Thin out the shoots of herbaceous plants, and ft stake where necessary. 3 Lift, divide and replant dahlias. ft Sow peas and broad beans to maintain a suc--5 cession. A) Sow French and runner beans towards the end ? of the month. 7. Plant potatoes, cabbage and cauliflower, ft Thin out seedling crops as soon as fit to handle.
