AUCKLAND, Sept. 7. Matinee races at Pukekohe on Saturday gave local horses engaged at the Auckland trotting meeting on the next two Saturdays an opportunity to show their progress since resuming training, and some interesting form was revealed. In the major pacing event, Flying Fiver showed a return to form by shading Vai Averil and Garry Dillon over 13 furlongs in 3min 31sec. There was little between the trio. In the main race for trotters, Prince Calumet again gave evidence of returning form when he outstayed Scotleigh and Scholar over the same distance.
Yakety Yak narrowly beat Direct Cobra and Swan Bay in a well run ten furlongs, and at the same distance Golcourt headed Bobbinet and Foretell. Swartz Pete and Covrey also won nicely in mile and a quarter heats. Looking improved with his racing at Hutt Park, the three-year-old, Bronze Falcon, gained himself a start in the
Auckland semi-classics by winning the three and four-year-old £2OO maiden pacers event by a head from another three-year-old, Lady Eden. A winner at New Brighton on Saturday, the southern filly, Julie Hanover, also made the grade for the same races as Bronze Falcon. Blue Prince did not start in the big race as he has broken down again and will retire from the race-track.
