FARNBOROUGH’S BRIGHTEST
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) FARNBOROUGH, September 6. The twenty-fourth Farnborough air show held a preview for aircraft manufacturers and journalists today and gave them their first view of many new aircraft and missiles.
Dominating the scene was a Blue Streak rocket, the first stage of the Eldo satellite launcher on which Britain, France and Germany are co-operating. Paths lined with Commonwealth flags led up to a huge marquee where many of the 316 exhibitors were putting finishing touches to their stands. The air show opens tomorrow. A prominent exhibit was the B.A.C. One-eleven, a rearengined short-haul jet, made by the British Aircraft Corporation. Potentially a big dollarearner for Britain, 25 of these planes have been ordered by American airlines, 14 by Braniff and five by Mohawk. Other customers are Central African Airways, Kuwait Airways and Aer Lingus, the Irish airline. The B.A.C. One-eleven, which carries nearly 80 passengers tourist class and 65 mixed first and tourist, will be in service next year. The VCIO, currently operating between London, Africa and the Persian Gulf, was also on show.
Models and diagrams of the Concorde supersonic British French jet liner showed how
it could join London and New York in three and a quarter hours, London and Sydney in less than 10 hours, and Lon-don-Johannesburg in five and a half hours. Cruising at about 1450 miles an hour between 50,000 ft and 62,000 ft, the Concorde is planned to carry 118 passengers 4000 miles non-stop. Also exhibited was a scale model of the Olympus 593 engine, a turbo-jet being developed by France and Britain’s Bristol-Siddeley for the Concorde. The Olympus is a derivative of the engine powering the TSR2, the British low-level supersonic bomber which is expected to make its maiden flight some time this week.
