PREVENTED WRECK

Warning To Train (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LA PAZ (Bolivia). A mother of eight knelt before a rushing locomotive and saved 250 passengers from certain death. Mrs Flprencia de Alfaro, aged 40, mother to eight children, was out for a stroll on the desolate Pucapampa plain, near Tupia, when she saw that a bridge on the international Buenos Aires-La Paz railway had been knocked flat by turbulent river waters. The sound of a rushing locomotive made her realise there would be a disaster if no quick action was taken, so she knelt on the rails and made desperate signs to the driver to stop the train. He did. Mrs Alfaro has now been decorated and rewarded with two million bolivianos (about £165) by National Women's Confederation.
