Power Bd. Take-over
fIV.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Sept. 5. The Waitara Borough Council is certain to accept the offer of the Taranaki Electric Power Board for its electrical undertakings, said the Mayor of Waitara (Mr W. H. Yardley). The rejection by Parliament yesterday of a bill empowering the New Plymouth City Council to take over the undertaking left his council no alternative. The council would meet next Wednesday and a decision was likely to be made to negotiate with the power board on details of the takeover. Mr Yardley said he was disappointed with Parliament’s decision. “I still think . the New Plymouth City Council’s was the better offer for the people of Waitara,” he said. “Whatever else happens, we have the city council to thank for the amount we will receive. The original power board offer was £35,000 and after the city council entered the field they were forced to raise it to £52,000, so we are £17,000 better off,” Mr Yardley said. “We didn’t set one board against the other, the Minister did. that.”
