10 Selected For Badminton Tour

PALMERSTON NORTH, September 6.
A 10-strong New Zealand badminton team will leave for a three-week tour of Malaysia in five weeks. This was announced at the end of the national championships at Palmerston North on Saturday.
The team is: Men: O. Clegg (Taranaki), R. Purser (Auckland), D. Higgins (Wellington), R. Musker (Wellington). Reserve: G. Jefferson (Waikato) Women: A. Pritchard (Auckland), G. Simpson (Auckland), G. Tompkins (Wellington). Reserves: B. Stott (Hawke’s Bay), C. Williams (Otago). Purser, who was named as team captain, and Mrs H. Robs in «Auckland), as expected from the No. 1 seeds, won the men's and women's singles titles. Fourth In Succession Mrs Robson gained her fourth successive championship when she beat the second seed, Mrs \ Gow (Auckland), 11-1, 11-7. The second set was fairly even for a time, but Mrs Robson started well and applied pressure towards the end. Purser beat the men's second sped, Clegg, without any real difficulty. 15-11, 15-8. He showed he was the master of the game. Whereas Clegg relied more on court smashes. Purser used the court to his advantage, placing well and making Clegg move to return shots. Purser went on to take the men s doubles with Clegg and the mixed doubles with Miss A. Glenie (Auckland), while Mrs Robson also won the women's doubles, with Mrs Gow. Long (Auckland) and Gow, 18-14, 15-3. Junior Boys' Singles.—J. Compton (Wellington) beat D. Stuart (Auckland), 15-5, 9-15, 15-2. Junior Girls’ Singles.—M. McFarlane i Waikato) beat G. Steel (Wellington), 11-5. 11-5. Junior Boys' Doubles.—Compton and J. Rowe (Wellington) beat I. Mackie (Manawatu) and Stuart, 18-14, 15-5. Junior Girls' Doubles.—R. Waites (Canterbury) and Steel beat E. and M. McFarlane, 15-2, 15-9. Junior Mixed Doubles.—Compton and Steel beat Mackie and S. Prince (Manawatu), 15-5, 12-15, 15-4. Boys’ Under 18 Singles.—T. Heaps (Wellington) beat B. Quirke (Wellington), 15-7, 15-2. Girls’ Under 18 Singles.—R. Glenie (Auckland) beat S. Craig (Taranaki), 11-4, 11-9.
