AUST. STEVEDORING RECOMMENDATION

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

MELBOURNE, September 6.

Nationalisation of Australia’s stevedoring industry was recommended last night bv the Deputy Federal Opposition leader, Mr E. G. Whitlam.

Addressing the Young Labour Association of Victoria at the Melbourne town hall, Mr Whitlam also suggested that nationalisation of some other industries would be beneficial. However, nationalisation

would not be so effective when companies were owned overseas

For instance, if the oil industry was nationalised oil supplies would be cut off; if the drug industry was nationalised Australia would

be denied licences: if the aluminium industry was nationalised Australia would be cut off from export markets. Mr Whitlam said that for this reason inter-nationalisa-tion was more urgent and necessary than nationalisation. “Public competition to prevent exploitation is the sensible and practical method in the Australian situation,” he said. Mr Whitlam also recommended that the Government establish new industries, particularly in the field of mineral resources which were moving into overseas hands. “We should reject the choice of foreign investment or no development,” he said. The commonwealth Government had the responsibility of pioneering new industries.
