RETAINED N.Z. LIFTING TITLE
The New Zealand Olympic weight-lifting representative, D. Oliver, of Auckland, retained his national heavy-weight weight-lifting title when the New Zealand weight-lifting championships were held in Christchurch at the week-end.
Oliver, who equalled his own national record for the snatch with 2901 b, showed that his training is well advanced for reaching peak form' for the Tokyo Olympics. He recorded 10001 b for the three .Olympic lifts. This is 351 b below his own national record. • .
F. King, of Canterbury, a former physical training instructor in the British Army, was first in the “Mr New Zealand” contest held in conjunction. King was “Mr Grfeat Britain” in 1958. Two New Zealand junior records were set in the lightweight division, in which T. Snowden, of Auckland, set a new figure of 2501 b in the jerk and M. Clifford recorded 1851 b in the snatch. There were 40 competitors altogether. Results (with the totals of the three Olympic lifts in the contest) were: Bantam-weight. A. Owens (Otago), 5351 b, 1; C. Clark (Auckland), 3901 b, 2.
