WATERFRONT PARKING
Prohibition Imposed All parking will be prohibited on the Lyttelton waterfront from October 1. “The present position is becoming serious owing to the restricted area along the breastworks,” said the chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) when the Lyttelton Harbour Board met yesterday. “It is getting seriously out of hand.” “Do you suspect any repercussions or reaction?” asked Mr F. W. Freeman. “I see no reason for them.” Mr Macfarlane replied, “Everyone has had plenty of warning. The unions know we have got to do something. We have done nothing until we were forced into it” When parking notices were first erected they were observed, but now they are being ignored, said the harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion). Between Nos. 2 and 3 wharves the position was absolutely chaotic. Watersiders were parking their cars in the areas set aside for taxis, horse floats and lorries working the wharves. The board had supported the watersiders in an approach to the Railways Department for parking on its land, but he understood they had been turned down flat, Mr Macfarlane said.
Small Craft In Harbour
It was not the present intention of the Lyttelton Harbour Board to remove craft from the inner harbour, the works committee reported to the board yesterday.
The committee was reporting on a letter from the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club asking that if it was necessary to remove some of the craft from moorings in the inner harbour provision be made for them at Cass Bay.
The board agreed that no action was necessary in the meantime.
